#setting: locality space

Here's an STS question that I just thought of: how and when did you go from old canon:tm: to the stuff you're writing now? Was it a gradual process or were you like "okay time for me to scrap these characters/concepts and write new stuff"?
This is an excellent question, thank you!! I took a minute to dig up my canons post to make sure I was remembering right, but for the most part it was a gradual process. With Pajiir especially I had a tendency to take the exact same characters and shuffle them into a completely different plot setup, but as I got better at writing they got more personality (I started Pajiir when I was 8 and what became locality space when I was 16). Old and Middle Canons for Pajiir break on what my focus was (you'll notice that Middle Canon was basically all about Zalen) and how much Delphonus stuff was involved. It's kind of the same for locality space - Old Canon ended when I abandoned the faery police stuff and tried to make better, funner, more reasonable settings for the stories (and also to be honest everything got kinkier in Middle Canon).
I got New Canon for Pajiir when I, coming off of years and years of thinking Aza had to be a princess and she had to choose between Keearo and Kirnus, decided that neither of those things needed to be true because I didn't want to write either of them even though I still really wanted to write Aza. And then I kind of realized this world could be my sandbox and I also missed the whole Dez and Delphonus shenanigans so I started rebuilding that. And from there it just snowballed. But the setting changed significantly as I moved into New Canon, and despite all the other changes I think that's still the major difference (that and I got my act together and said "no but Zalen should actually be with Silas fr").
I got New Canon for locality space when I was rereading Spinder and Georg which...is an absolute disaster of a book but it was fun to yell about to my friend who actually remembers being around when I was writing it. I was also thinking about Isabelle and Spynder and just generally how much I love the two of them as a couple, but I wanted them to be as actually cool on the page as they were in my head. Add a little Expanse and Cowboy Bebop &c. and this is when I said fuck it I want to write space nonsense and no one can stop me:
(if your characters don't canonically have a world is it an AU to put them on a spaceship under the command of Spinder's gruff nephew-in-law probably in an allied fleet with the tall action hero lesbian rebels and the whole thing is kind of Alice Isn't Dead but like...in space)
"if your story is bad, just put it in space" -me, kind of
The more I thought about it the more this actually worked, lol, though obviously the plot changed from my initial concept. Then I just sort of shifted all my other Faeryland stories over to this new world.
I guess the short answer is I rarely scrap characters, but sometimes they get very recycled/remodeled. It's usually missing writing those characters that makes me start a new version. But I cannibalize settings and plots all the time until I find something that speaks to me.

rlly hate how the world has moved towards fast online shipping 4 everything bc i havent Personally moved into that philosophy at All
like im still in the mindset that like. if im buying smth online it should take on the scale of months to show up and cost 20 dollars to ship so i just never bother unless i dont need it right away and its really specific. so every time i order online i feel bad bc this thing i really dont need in such a hurry is being fast track flung across the Atlantic directly to my door in 3 calendar days and im just like please i dont even need this before the year flips.
but then for like normal items i just need i keep trying to find in-person locations that sell it and they just dont bc they have like 5 aisles and theyre all half empty like its the purge and if they do have what i need it's always like 15x more expensive than i can even afford despite being at a walmart.
especially when it comes to things i want to touch or look at before ever buying it really sucks bc sometimes there's just not in person options or only really bad ones

oh yeah!!!! forgot to mention this is my last day at work :') honestly the pay wasn't the greatest (not complaing though, this is a public position and it was certainly enough to get by) but ngl this was probably one of the most enjoyable jobs ive had 😭❤️ for a ridiculously conservative population like this im glad they seemed to enjoy the numerous marxist solutions to all their problems getting slid in under the reasoning of "community/small town values" and "neighbours having each other's back" and 5 minute small talk about how taxes work at the line in the grocery store lmao
#gu6chan's musings#microdosing american presidential life by going into local politics; completely uprooting everything set in place by the last guy and then#fucking off to work in a resort town as a grocer for the rest of my days (2 years)#i get why they do this all the time now ngl#its really amazing though how much you can get through to people just by explaining to them how things work like it's some kind of#insider secret or forbidden knowledge though. like being in a position of the government they're already VERY distrusting of is one thing#but rlly as long as you're friendly; casual and start off conversations with 'Not a lot of people know this/This isn't ever something they#talk about but' and launch into the most basic explanation of anything they'll treat your brave defiance against the system (explaining how#taxes they think are communist money laudering schemes are used to pay for the benefits of capitalism (community projects) they want)#like the gospel of christ#very proud to have wokeified my village to this degree; especially given the irony i was largely only given this position through a mix of#being the 'right' kind of foreigner (chad aryan german woman whose quiet and polite 😍) and outright nepotism on my father's end of the#family bc i kid you not; i am NOT that familiar with his side of the family but they take up like half the space in northern michigan and#especially this town for whatever reason? it's insane bc like almost in every sector there's one of us 😭#but yeah it's all to say I'm at like 80% convinced that when it came to the local elections it rlly was just whatever name they recognised#first and wouldn't you know!!! but i like to think at least a little of it was bc i knew the people pretty well and was nice......... 🥺#and also bc the other family who practically owns the town bc they own 50% of the businesses around here and their name is plastered on#EVERYTHING (they're a heating and plumbing company; they're a hardware store; they're realtors; they're grocers....) also have been in#politics for quite some time and there's been so many scandals (Just to name the biggest current one this year; the mayor got arrested for a#REALLY bloody car accident he caused while driving drunk lmao but shhhh i didn't tell you that :3<) that they were willing to go with#literally any other option. and then they voted the same people in again. (but also meeeeeee :3)

Why yes I am still thinking about graphs as presheaves. Another thing you can do with functors from small categories is think about their limits and colimits. We usually think of limits and colimits as objects of the codomain category, so in this case the limit of a graph-as-functor would be a set. However, we can turn it back into a graph by then applying the diagonal functor Δ from the category of sets to the category of graphs.
Let's think about what this functor does. It maps a set X onto the constant functor from Q^op at X. Such a functor maps every object of Q onto X and every morphism of Q onto the identity function of X. So, the vertex set and the arrow set of Δ(X) are equal, and the source and target functions are the identity. The graph we get consists of one vertex for every element of X and each vertex has a single loop.
A cone under or cocone over a functor F: C -> D is exactly a natural transformation from a constant functor to F or from F to a constant functor, respectively. The limit of F is the terminal object in the category of cones under F, so in addition to the limit object we have a natural transformation from the constant functor at that object to F. Dually for colimits. Natural transformations in Q^hat are graph homomorphisms, so we can do some fun interpretation here.
The limit of a functor with domain Q^op (or Q, as they are isomorphic) is an equalizer. In Set, the equalizer of functions f,g: X -> Y is the set { x ∈ X : f(x) = g(x) } (up to a canonical bijection). It follows that the limit of a graph is exactly the set of arrows of G whose source vertex coincides with their target vertex. The set of all loops of G. Applying Δ to this we get the graph that has a vertex for every loop, and a loop on each of these vertices. The universal cone from this graph to G is the graph homomorphism that maps each loop in this graph onto the corresponding loop in G.
The colimit of a functor from Q^op is a coequalizer (surprise surprise), and in Set the coequalizer of f and g is the quotient set of Y by the smallest equivalence relation ~ such that f(x) ~ g(x) for all x ∈ X. In a graph G we have that Y is the vertex set, X is the arrow set, and f and g are the source and target functions. This means that if two vertices v and w are connected by some arrow, then they will be equivalent under ~. Applying transitivity and symmetry, we find that the equivalence classes of ~ are exactly the connected components of G. The universal cocone over G is the graph homomorphism that maps all vertices in a connected component of G onto the corresponding vertex of the graph-that-has-a-vertex-for-every-connected-component, and all arrows in that connected component onto the unique loop on that vertex.

Hi sapling
Thoroughly optional worldbuildy ask: are there any very specific inspirations for parts of your world that may be anywhere on the spectrum of significance?
Hi Sleepy!
In locality space, the island of Imni, where Sorian and Avis are from, is directly inspired by Emne/Emhain Ablach from Irish folklore, and the whole concept of Rade as a planet is inspired by the genre of Irish folklore known as Immram (Voyages) which involves people visiting a bunch of islands in the Otherworld/an otherworldly place. Imni is less explicitly Celtic-inspired than it used to be, but I still kept the idea of "silver" trees with "golden" fruit and made that a major cultural touchstone.
Isabel's religion is also inspired by the belief in fairies that exists across Celtic cultures (i.e. you don't anger them or it brings bad luck) and the way that brownies in Scottish and English folklore are meant to be given offerings in exchange for their freely offered work. She maintains a little altar in the Nicea where she gives offerings to the protective spirits that live wherever people live. They don't do work in the same way as brownies, but if they are not acknowledged they do get angry. That's why her grandfather's bakery burned down: he didn't pay attention to the building spirits.
A slightly sillier one is that Svando's, a chain of fancy truck stop/hotels that are scattered throughout the galaxy, were inspired by Bucky Quanto's from My Dad The Bounty Hunter. The inside is more like a Buc-ee's but the idea of having The Location That You Go When You're On A Space Trip where you also get in trouble for tussling got carried over.
One more - the warp tunnels are inspired by a lot of different magical portals but the fact that they are actual tunnels and partly maintained by technological means is based on hyperspace/hyperspace gates from Cowboy Bebop. Believe it or not Nicea was originally gonna be a grungy space noir about Declan and his band of outlaws...
Thanks for the ask <3

does anyone have any good recommendations for online retailers for movies/tv shows? Been working on building up my bluray collection, and I don't like using amazon, so I'm hoping there's a good alternative.

Their business card is a 6inch ruler
#we dont have any good specialty art shops in Lawrence#we have a couple of places downtown that are kinda similar but they pretty much only have name brand stuff#nothing made locally#if it wasnt so expensive to start a business in Lawrence i might have a niche for handmade paints there#im trying to figure out what oil they used in their base to make it antimicrobial#cuz it smells really good lol#like my paints smell very strongly of cinnamon#im assuming clove oil since thats most common.....but idk if i can identify clove by smell#smells christmas-y tho#if i was more outgoing i mightve asked the owner some questions about it#my mom tried to talk me into getting the watercolor kit that had some little pieces of watercolor paper and a pencil and a brush#and i was like ''i have all that tho'' and she was like ''but then you could use them now.''#''.....yea. i have all that WITH me.'' like. im not gonna travel without my favorite art supplies lol#i gave up suitcase space for my giant watercolor sketchbook just in case i wanted to paint#i have MOSTLY travel watercolor sets and brought all of them with me in my pencil bag#i specifically filled up all my watercolor brushes with water the night before we left and made sure i had my favorite mechanical pencil#(which btw if you have executive dysfunction and like to paint with watercolors i highly recommend the watercolor brushes you fill#with water. i paint way more than i used to cuz i dont have to fill a cup with water any time i wanna paint)#i have my regular sketchbook#i even brought my sudoku book and a couple pens in case i felt like playing sudoku#i dont travel without my bag of activities. i may not always do the activities i bring but i like to have options#at least its better than when i was a kid cuz i tried to bring activities AND like 5 stuffed animals#my suitcase was usually half stuffed animals#i also usually had a few shoved into my pillowcase with my blanky
